Health Without Pills
Wouldn’t it be great if our bodies were like our cars and came with operating manuals, so we’d know when it was time for an oil change, or to have the tires rotated, or the fluids changed?
Wouldn’t it be great if we had little indicator lights that told us when we needed extra vitamin C or we were too low on sleep or which muscles needed stretching or strengthening to restore balance?
Unfortunately, we don’t have the operating manual or the indicator lights. We have only certain rough guidelines to go by, such as the “8 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day” or the “don’t smoke” guidelines. Our “indicator lights” are symptoms, which don’t usually alert us until the deficiencies or imbalances are rather advanced, even on the verge of a serious condition, disease, or illness.
Too often, people operate their bodies on the “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” principle. Although this principle may be valid for an old car, we don’t have the luxury of being able to trade in our bodies. I’m too often reminded of the old adage, “If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.”
We need a more specific, detailed “operating manual” for our bodies that will result in timely preventive maintenance and reduce the chances of premature aging and illness. Amongst these articles from Dr. Liponis' column in Homestyle magazine we've provided some of the chapters of our bodies' operating manual.
Don't reserve preventive maintenance for your car! Read your own operating manual!
